Curators: Vanessa Brito and Kirsteen Macdonald

Work drives us to do more, to live with deadlines, to be late, to be worn out. Should one always be more efficient, both exuberant and exhausted by work that neither stops nor is interrupted? How to continue to create and work together? During three days, artists and students from the Art School of Marseille will settle in the space of the Galerie Art-cade in order to reinvent a collective work.

Artist : Philippe Murphy

For his Solo show at the Galerie HO, Philippe Murphy presents a global performative artwork. Between fiction and reality. He aims to transform the gallery space into a coffee-chocolate shop in which he will work everyday. He wants to experiment and share the idea of gesamstkunstwerk which reveals, for him, the artist’s condition and role in society; a performance artist, as much as a skilled worker, a waiter, a social facilitator, etc.

SING SIGN: a close duet

Performed by Daniel Padden and Hanna Tuulikki.

Commissioned for the Edinbourgh Art Festival 2015. This work will be part of the group exhibition “Territoires Sonores, Sound Territories” at Mac Arteum, in Châteauneuf-le-Rouge, from 26th  May to 7th July. Curated by Christiane Courbon and Bernard Pourrière.

“SING SIGN: a close duet” is a vocal and gestural suite in which, facing one another, a male and female performer enact an enigmatic encounter: a wordless dialogue conducted entirely through gesture and song. The choreography, derived from British Sign Language, weaves together street-names and mimetic gestures, while the melody is split between two voices. Despite the complete absence of words, at the heart of SING SIGN is an embodied reflection on language, and how the languages we have access to shape our experience of the world around us.

Conceived, composed and directed by Hanna Tuulikki.

La Nuit de l’Instant

Since 2010, “La Nuit de l’Instant” offers another look at current practices in photography today. Videos, slideshows, installations, performances, and films explore fixed images through a joyful walk in the streets of Marseille’s oldest neighbourhood (the Panier). The selected works are shown in various places (theaters, concert halls, animation centers, shop windows, cultural institutions, underground structures, historical monuments, schools etc). For its 9th edition, “La Nuit de l’Instant” will honour Scottish artists within the framework of an exchange and residency program between Marseille and Glasgow, in partnership with Street Level Photoworks.

Opening in various places of the Panier.

Rachel Maclean develops in her videos a world inspired from fairy tales imagery in the format of TV series for teenagers. Her outlandish films, with saturated colours in which she plays each of the characters, explore in a cynical but effective way the discrepancy between the sugar-coated world of comedies for children and the horrors described in fairy tales.

If one of them embraces video as a platform for the study and the activation of sculptures, the other one uses it as a story-telling tool, creating through editing interspace stories of variable temporalities. In residency together over a four month period at the 3 bis f, they operate in a context of permeability, contamination, reversibility, attentive and in reference to this sensitive environment and its daily routine.
